“You want the truth? You can’t handle the truth!” – Colonel Nathan R. Jessep (Jack Nicholson), A few good men.
I love that line. Say it out aloud several times. The more you say it, the louder you tend to scream the words. The truth is that most people cannot handle the truth. Why is that? Maybe it’s because of deep seated fears. Maybe it’s because we want people to be ‘nice’ to us – the acronym for ‘nice’ is Nothing Inside (me) Cares Enough. Maybe it’s because we don’t want our weaknesses exposed. Maybe it’s because we’re searching for excuses. Whatever it is, I believe we are all smart and intuitive enough to know our own reasons why we “can’t handle the truth.”
So… what’s this all got to do with creating Your Best Body Ever!
Well… truth is, most people don’t do the hard slog to get what they really really want.
I am by no means an extroadinary athlete. In fact, according to some of the physiological testing that I’ve had done over the years, I’m just a little better than average. Ain’t that a kick in the backside? I mean, there I am as keen as ever to dive wholeheartedly into soccer, rugby, tennis, running, cycling, triathlons and competitive aerobics (you name it, I’ve tried it), but I’m told, “You’re just a little better than average.” So you know what I did? That’s right – I did it anyway! And I did it as best as I could. Until I felt as though I had given as much as I wanted to give. I won a couple of competitive aerobics events, got a few ‘man of the match’ awards, won my age group for several duathlons, and placed third in a half marathon. That’s not all that impressive or important now. The thing that matters the most is that I’m still doing it. I’m doing it every day. And I’m doing it to the best of my ability. Because that’s what gets results. And that’s what makes me happy.
So, how do you do it?
There’s 3 essential ingredients to a successful exercise and training plan for life. Because that is what it’s going to take to achieve your best body ever. Yes – you’re going to have to do it for the rest of your life. And that’s the truth!
Oh, I’m sorry. Were you expecting 3 magic pills? Hahaha – welcome to the TRUTH!
- Consistency: whatever exercise or training you’re doing, you need to be doing it consistently most days per week, every week per month, every month per year, and for the rest of your life. TRUTH!
- Frequency: your exercise/training needs to be done at least 5 out of 7 days per week. Any more than 2 rest days in a week and you’re not going to get your best body ever. TRUTH!
- Intensity: Question: “Do you do daily exercise?” Answer: “Yes – I take the dog for a walk every day.” TRUTH: Wrong Answer. Your exercise and training needs to be of a high intensity if you want to achieve your best body ever. If you’re not pushing yourself well out of your comfort zone, your body is not changing for the better. That’s the TRUTH!
Now get out there, have some fun, and get your best body ever!
